Bushel's 2025 State of the Farm Report: Technology Strengthens Trusted Relationships

Bushel, a leading software provider for the agricultural supply chain, has unveiled its 2025 State of the Farm Report, offering insights into U.S. farmers' business decisions, technology usage, and supply chain preferences. The comprehensive survey, encompassing over 1,300 respondents, underscores the enduring importance of trusted relationships in agriculture, while highlighting a significant shift towards digital tools, particularly among farmers under the age of 50. Notably, 35% of these younger farmers expressed willingness to make grain offers via mobile apps, yet only 15% currently have access to such options, indicating a gap between technological capabilities and farmer readiness.
The report also reveals a marked decline in traditional record-keeping methods, with pen and paper usage dropping to 21%, as 76% of farmers now employ some form of farm management software, averaging three different programs for their operations. Despite facing uncertainties, the farming community remains optimistic: 35% plan to expand their operations, 50% intend to maintain their current scale, and only 15% anticipate downsizing or exiting the industry. Additionally, while paper checks remain prevalent, there's a growing preference for digital payments among younger farmers, with 61% favoring mobile app transactions and 64% inclined towards mobile check deposits. These trends underscore the evolving landscape of agriculture, where technology and personal relationships increasingly intersect to drive business decisions.

International Team Advocates for Improved Crop Yield Estimation Methods

An international organization of agronomists, including researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is urging a reevaluation of current statistical methods used to estimate crop yield potential and yield gaps. Their study, published on April 8 in Nature Food, highlights that existing models may either overestimate or underestimate yield potential due to over-reliance on best-case scenarios and broad regional assumptions. For instance, in the United States, these models often base estimates on data from the most productive counties during optimal weather conditions, which may not accurately represent average climates or typical soil conditions across broader regions. Conversely, in areas like Africa, where farmers might have limited access to resources, these models could undervalue potential yields. The researchers advocate for a "bottom-up" approach that integrates robust crop modeling with localized weather and soil data, aiming to provide more accurate assessments of agricultural productivity.
Accurate yield potential and gap estimations are crucial for strategic investments in agricultural research and development, especially as the global population continues to grow. By identifying regions with the greatest capacity for increased crop production, policymakers and stakeholders can better allocate resources to enhance food security. The team emphasizes that refining these estimation methods is essential to effectively plan for and meet the escalating food demands worldwide.
