WSU Scientists Develop ‘Matchless’ Kentucky Bluegrass for Higher Yields and Eco-Friendly Farming

Researchers at Washington State University have developed a new variety of Kentucky bluegrass called 'Matchless,' which offers higher seed yields without the need for post-harvest field burning. Traditionally, growers burned fields to remove stubble and reduce thatch, but environmental concerns led to bans and regulations on this practice in the Pacific Northwest. 'Matchless' provides an environmentally friendly alternative, benefiting both seed producers and consumers.

Developed from the 'Kenblue' variety, 'Matchless' was bred by former WSU Professor Bill Johnston and further refined by Professor Michael Neff and his team. The breeding process involved identifying unique traits in a field of largely cloned plants, a challenging task that requires patience and expertise. The result is a resilient grass suitable for sports fields, golf courses, and home lawns, offering a uniform appearance and quick self-repair capabilities. 'Matchless' is protected under a Plant Variety Protection Certificate issued by the USDA.
