A Bay Area startup, Tensorfield Agriculture, is transforming the landscape of weed control with a groundbreaking technology that uses superheated vegetable oil to eliminate weeds with surgical precision. Their proprietary method, known as thermal micro-jetting, targets unwanted plants using a 232-nozzle array that sprays superheated canola oil directly onto the weeds, delivering quarter-inch accuracy at a speed of 1.2 miles per hour. By avoiding traditional tillage or herbicide application, this approach protects soil integrity and reduces chemical dependency, especially beneficial for organic farmers struggling with labor-intensive hand weeding.

Tensorfield’s machines boast significant advantages over existing methods like laser weeding. They are lighter, faster, and consume up to 80% less energy, reducing the risk of soil compaction while operating two to four times faster. Equipped with depth cameras and a self-leveling system, the machines can navigate uneven terrain with ease, maintaining nozzle accuracy even on imperfect beds. This innovation not only offers cost and labor savings for both organic and conventional growers, but also paves the way for more sustainable, tech-forward farming practices in an industry eager for efficient, eco-conscious solutions.

On April 2, 2025, former President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new tariff policy aimed at protecting American farmers from what he calls unfair foreign trade practices. Ethan Lane of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association praised the action, saying it addresses trade barriers that have held back U.S. beef exports. Meanwhile, Becky Rasdall Vargas of the International Dairy Foods Association expressed more cautious support, acknowledging the need for fair trade but warning that prolonged tariffs could increase costs for American businesses and consumers.
