John Deere Unveils $20 Billion Decade-Long Investment in U.S. Facilities

John Deere used its May 15 earnings call to unveil a decade-long, $20 billion pledge to expand and modernize its U.S. footprint. Chairman & CEO John May said the capital will flow into the company’s 60 factories and offices across 16 states, reinforcing Deere’s 188-year tradition of manufacturing at home while shoring up supply-chain resilience for next-generation ag equipment. The announcement builds on the $2.5 billion Deere has already funneled into U.S. plants since 2019 and is framed as a catalyst for an estimated $25 billion in hometown economic impact over the same 10-year window.
Early projects highlight where the money will land: a 120,000-sq-ft expansion of the Strafford, MO remanufacturing hub; a new excavator factory in Kernersville, NC; growth of the turf-equipment campus in Greeneville, TN; and fresh assembly lines for the 9RX high-horsepower tractor in Waterloo, IA. Coupled with Deere’s existing 30,000 U.S. employees, 50,000 dealership staff, and a $200 million commitment through the John Deere Foundation by 2031, the investment signals deeper community roots, more skilled jobs, and faster deployment of autonomy, electrification, and precision-ag innovations that U.S. farmers have been demanding.

Anthology Speeds Microbe Engineering for Cheaper, Greener Manufacturing

Boston-based startup Anthology has built a system that can redesign microbes for factories much faster than today’s methods. By combining genetic tools (“jumping genes”), micro-fluidic chips that handle millions of cells at once, and AI analysis, the platform generates huge numbers of DNA changes and instantly spots which microbes grow on low-cost feedstocks or make more product. That means engineers are no longer limited to workhorses like E. coli and yeast; harder-to-tune organisms such as fungi can be optimized in weeks instead of months.
Anthology’s first step is to prove it can cut costs for companies already using industrial microbes. In parallel, it is co-designing brand-new strains with large manufacturers that want to turn farm waste or even plastic into proteins, chemicals, or fibers. If the approach scales, it could widen the range of bio-based products and lower production costs across food, materials, and pharma.
